Mapúa offers DepEd-recognized home school education program for senior high school
Mapúa University has begun offering Mapúa HOME or Homeschool: Onboard to Modern-day Education, its Department of Education (DepEd)-approved home-schooling program that offers alternative and flexible Senior High School (SHS) education.
Mapúa HOME is offered for Grade 11 Academic Track strands STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), ABM (Accountancy, Business, and Management), HUMSS (Humanities and Social Sciences), and GAS (General Academic Strand).
The new thrust is part of Mapúa’s move to champion limitless and online learning supported by powerful digital educational technology tools for young students to be unbound by time, distance, and even circumstances that hinder continuous learning. The program will encourage learners to exercise independent learning, creativity, and discovery while utilizing the University’s cutting-edge educational solutions, its information and communications technology systems, and other available media.
Students will get access to: Mapúa E-text Infinity Solution (METIS), an enterprise solution of different e-books and digital solutions of Wiley, Cengage, and McGraw Hill; the virtual laboratory simulations in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics; and MATLAB, a programming and numeric computing platform used to analyze data, develop algorithms, and create models. Learners will also use Grammarly and Turnitin to develop their writing skills and reinforce proper revision habits. They will also utilize Mapúa’s collection of online databases, digital documents, audio, video, and other institutional resources in digital format.
The learning materials in Mapúa HOME are aligned with Mapúa SHS’s curricula. It will engage learners with the help of faculty members and licensed and trained course specialists who will guide them to acquire the required competencies for their chosen strands.
Teachers as learner facilitators will conduct assessments. These are in the form of: (1) quizzes composed of ‘check your understanding’ questions and practice problems to help learners master their lessons; (2) essays or writing activities for learners to reflect on and increase the value of their recognition of their learnings and how they will apply it in real-life situations; (3) long quizzes or mastery tests that cover the learning from the quizzes and activities done in the learning module; (4) performance tasks such as activities, outputs, and portfolios to be assigned at the end of the course module; (5) exit project like research paper; and (6) an 80-hour work immersion to gain hands-on experience, which is aligned with their preferred higher education program.
Instructions will be given via the Cardinal EDGE, Mapúa’s online learning platform. Pre-recorded lectures and modules will be provided to learners. For all activities and outputs, subject adviser will provide verbal or written feedback to learners, as well as to parents for them to track their children’s learning progress. Consultation hours every week will be held via Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and email.
Setting this modality apart from online education, which is a form of learning delivery that is electronically supported and relying heavily on the Internet for teacher-and-student interactions and class engagements, home-schooling implements asynchronous study by students in combination with a one-on-one facilitator-to-student form of teaching. This makes Mapúa HOME a different and more coordinated learning strategy for Mapúa Senior High School. Its discipline fosters independence by providing opportunities for students to reflect on the achievement of student outcomes through the asynchronous learning modality and encourages flexibility in distance learning by strengthening appropriate learning strategies.
