Renaissance Mapúa: Evolving. Flourishing. Rising.
Mapúa University’s forward-looking perspective for its education has brought many successes to the institution. Attesting to this are the programs and innovations it has continuously offered and delivered for its stakeholders around the world despite challenges, and the global recognitions it has received in the years leading to its 96th founding anniversary. From transforming itself into a Digital, Research-Driven, Outcomes-Based, International Domain (DROID) in 2017, to moving up as a 4 Stars-rated University by London’s Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) in 2020, the University has evolved, flourished, and risen into an academic institution of a very high caliber in Asia.
As it marks a new milestone in its illustrious history of excellence, the University will start a celebration called Renaissance Mapúa.
“Renaissance Mapúa is a celebration of the indomitable spirit characteristic of everything Mapúan. As with the historical renaissance, which signaled the rebirth of culture, art, science, and philosophy, following the Middle Ages likewise punctuated by disease and afflication, Renaissance Mapúa showcases the University as evolving, flourishing, rising, transforming into something better despite crises and disruptions, both local and global,” said Prof. Ma. Eliza Torres, Chairperson of Mapúa’s Department of Arts and Letters.
Meeting global standards
Mapúa closed the year with a new recognition as it moved up from being a 3 Stars-rated university by QS to being a 4-Star institution. It also garnered high scores under eight performance categories: 5 Stars rating under the Employability, Facilities, and Social Responsibility categories for its graduates’ readiness for work, its various facilities, and its environmental impact and efforts in the community; 4 Stars rating under the Teaching and Inclusiveness categories, taking into account student satisfaction and the opportunities it provides for learning and development; 4 Stars rating under the Program Strength category for its Bachelor of Science in Computer Science program; and 3 Stars rating for Internationalization and Academic Development categories, considering international collaboration, international faculty, international diversity, and faculty development.
Apart from the ratings it acquired from QS, Mapúa still houses the most number of ABET-accredited programs for a single campus in the Philippines, with 11 engineering programs, namely, Biological Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Environmental and Sanitary Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering; and three (3) computing programs, namely, Computer Science, Information Systems, and Information Technology (www.abet.org). ABET accreditation signifies that Mapúa’s engineering and computing programs meet the quality standards to produce graduates prepared to enter the global workforce, enabling graduates to be qualified for careers in multinational companies, which often require graduation from an ABET-accredited program. It also allows graduates of Mapúa to seek a license in the United States, where licensure for engineering and surveying professions is regulated at the state level.
“A big challenge has been the definition and promotion of international education standards. Addressing this issue impacts on the trend of global mobility of graduates across national borders. One solution has been to define those standards in terms of program outcomes and use these in international accreditation of programs. This is the context of the ABET accreditation of Mapua’s engineering and computing programs and its advocacy of outcomes-based education,” said Mapúa President and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Reynaldo B. Vea.
In 2019, the University’s Civil Engineering program received a recognition from the United Kingdom’s Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), further boosting the global qualification of its graduates. ICE is an independent professional association for civil engineers in the UK. It is based in London and has over 92,000 members, of whom three quarters are located in the UK, while the rest are located in more than 150 other countries. With ICE’s recognition, Mapúa’s Civil Engineering graduates will no longer need to apply for an academic assessment to gain an ICE professional qualification.
The University also went beyond its duties as an academic entity when it entered the global Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings 2020. Mapúa was ranked in five (5) Sustainable Development Goals out of 17: SDG 6–Clean Water and Sanitation (Rank 101-200 out of 330 institutions); SDG 7–Affordable and Clean Energy (Rank 201-300 out of 361 institutions); SDG 8–Decent Work and Economic Growth (Rank 401+ out of 479 institutions); SDG 12– Responsible Consumption and Production (Rank 301+ out of 360 institutions); and lastly, for the second time in a row, SDG 17–Partnership for the Goals (Rank 601+ out of 806 institutions). Overall, it placed 601+ out of 766 participating institutions worldwide.
The THE Impact Rankings are the only global performance tables that assess universities against the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by using carefully calibrated indicators to provide comprehensive and balanced comparisons across three broad areas: research, outreach, and stewardship (timeshighereducation.com). A university’s inclusion in the rankings implies that it is championing the causes in the SDGs, which are greatly supported by the young generation. The Impact Rankings do not look specifically into the academic strengths of the institution but put greater weight on its tangible efforts in making a difference in the world and its students.
Upholding digital education
Having considered a digital platform as an edge to its education early the past decade, Mapúa’s already established online learning facility became a beacon during the trying times caused by the pandemic. When schools struggled to secure resources to deliver fully online and modular types of teaching, the University’s digital tools for learning were already in full force to ensure its students continue with their education. Though online learning tools were readily available in its online learning platform Mapúa Digital Academics (MDA), the University continued to strengthen its resources by investing heavily in new tools and innovations, more so, giving boost to its learning management system Cardinal EDGE or Education in a Digital and Global Environment. Among its key education partners now are Blackboard Learn, Blackboard Collaborate, Cengage, Panopto, VitalSource, Wiley, -Coursera and LinkedIn Leanring. It was even tagged by US-based education and technology company Cengage as among the most digital-ready universities in Asia last June.
Mapúa also expanded its fully online programs by offering new fully online engineering and information technology undergraduate degrees, giving access to its aspiring learners across the globe. The University now has (6) fully online undergraduate degrees: Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Computer Science, and Information Technology; and nine (9) fully online master’s degrees: the Master of Engineering (MEP) programs in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, and Industrial Engineering; the Master of Science (MS) programs in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering; and the Master of Information Technology program. Mapúa owns the Philippines’ first fully online graduate program in engineering, the Master of Engineering in Industrial Engineering, which was launched in 2017.
Strong international ties
Mapúa also continued to strengthen its partnerships with universities abroad by implementing virtual international programs despite the dire situation caused by the COVID-19 crisis. Together with Universitas Islam Indonesia and Telkom University, Mapúa organized a short program entitled “P2A Virtual Journey 2020: Green Growth and Eco-Innovation,” which ran from September 7 to 21. Fifty students from across the member universities of Passage to ASEAN Association participated in the program.
It also developed the Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) with Ontario College and invited Dr. Yoshikazu Yoshida, Dean of Toyo University’s Graduate School of Science and Engineering and Director of Inoue Enryo Research Center, to conduct a virtual class on Monozukuri or Japan’s production of things or manufacturing practices. Apart from these, it also organized the mini-colloquium series focused on chemical technology, renewable energy, and bio/nanomaterials with partner universities Universiti Malaya, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, and Chung Yuan Christian University. It has also been proactively seeking virtual international programs offered by partner universities and initiated discussions on the implementation of virtual exchange programs.
“We will continue to expand our network to develop more research as well as academic and industry collaborations to provide our students with more opportunities to be exposed to international learnings and global perspectives, whether through face-to-face or virtual mode,” shared Engr. Rosette Eira E. Camus, Director of Mapúa’s Office of International Career and Exchange Programs (ICEP).
As a result of the mini-colloquium series, Mapúa is now developing its Research Exchange Program with select Malaysian and Indonesian universities. It is also working on several dual-degree programs with Universiti Teknologi Petronas, Institut Teknologi Sepuloh – Nopember, and University of Central Oklahoma.
On the generation of new knowledge
Mapúa has also continued to create a learning environment where research, development, and innovation (RDI) can flourish among its students and researchers. The University sees to it that, though the current academic landscape is completely challenged by the ongoing crisis, it remains to have more reasons to push for the generation of new knowledge to combat industry and society issues. It ensures that its constituents don’t lose the drive to continue to innovate by providing support and venues for RDI to its young researchers.
“RDI keeps our classroom instructions current. A school has to work at the frontiers of knowledge if it wants to do RDI. Furthermore, RDI enables us to contribute intellectual capital in addition to human resources towards our country’s advancement,” expressed Dr. Vea. “If we are able to communicate online what we used to communicate face-to-face in pre-pandemic times, then we can continue to inspire our students to imagine how to improve and add value to existing products, systems, and processes.”
Exemplifying Mapúan excellence in the global arena, Mapúa produced the first global Sustainability Award Winner of the James Dyson Award 2020. Its Electrical Engineering student Carvey Ehren Maigue was recognized for his remarkable invention AuREUS or Aurora Renewable Energy and UV Sequestration, a system that uses technology synthesized from upcycled crop waste to absorb stray UV light from sunlight and convert it to clean renewable electricity. The BS Electrical Engineering student was personally handpicked by James Dyson, the founder and chief engineer of Dyson Ltd and James Dyson Foundation, out of close to 1,800 global entries.
“I hope that my journey will spark the interest of students in engineering and science. It feels great to know that in this field, we have the capacity to provide solutions to various problems. Filipinos have a lot of ideas, and I hope we realize that it is possible to turn these ideas into actual solutions. We must encourage the youth to pursue and explore things and to not be discouraged because of failures. There are people who are actually expecting innovations from the Philippines. That’s why we need to keep going,” shared Carvey Ehren Maigue.
Learning the impact of disasters to remote communities and the lack of tools to combat their effects, Mapúa, together with the Marinduque State College and the local government units (LGUs) of Marinduque, also developed a mobile and web-based application called eSalba that will help LGUs in improving the disaster and health resiliency capabilities of 54,000 households in the island province. The application enables users to see the locations of those who will report incidents, as well as whereabouts of responders, areas for evacuation, and health centers in the community, allowing LGUs to implement a quick and coordinated disaster response. Implementing such breakthrough in the island province is first step of the team of developers’ vision to scale up eSalba to cover the whole region of Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan (MIMAROPA).
A celebratory year
This week marks Mapúa’s 96th year of delivering excellence as a premier engineering and technological university in Asia. With the milestones it has accomplished in the recent years, Mapúa shall assure the continuity of learning and improve further on its delivery.
The five-day-long celebration will be filled with various exciting activities that will showcase the prowess of members of the community, tapping into its known strengths – literature, art, entrepreneur, technology, engineering, and research. The different schools will conduct webinars on topics like video making, animation, graphics, architecture and design, physics advancements, outcomes-based education (OBE) best practices, specifically in online learning, and on new engineering perspectives. Several competitions will also be held like a 1-minute video making contest, spoken word poetry, essay writing contest, Physics Olympics, math wizard, and Valorant game tournament. An exhibit will also be conducted by Mapúa’s School of Architecture, Design, and the Built Environment. Students of the E.T. Yuchengco School of Business and Management will be conducting an online selling auction. An online “kapihan” will also be hosted by the School of Social Sciences and Education’s Student Council alongside members of Mapúa Psychological Society.
The University will also be showcasing researches of students and professors in a colloquium and will share research experiences to be conducted by the school’s Office of the International Linkages for Research and Development. Mapúa will also be recognizing its outstanding students in The Cardinal Excellence Awards, as well as employees in the Service Awards.
