Mapúa University, the Philippines’ premier engineering and technological school, is set to create a pool of new and skilled cybersecurity professionals through a curriculum fortified with the relevant specialized courses. A new cybersecurity specialization track will be offered by Mapúa starting academic year 2020-2021, to address the demands of industries for cybersecurity experts who will help protect company data and digital spaces from the evolving cyber threats and attacks.
"The integrity of IT systems and the privacy of data are primordial concerns in this information age. For many organizations, the integrity of information systems is an existential issue. Likewise, protecting data from being used for nefarious ends is a critical concern for individuals and firms. Therefore the importance of cybersecurity cannot be understated,” said Dr. Reynaldo B. Vea, president of Mapúa University.
The University has partnered with leading companies in the technology industry, CompTIA and Sophos, for its new course offerings. Through these partnerships, Mapúa will be provided with the updated necessary information on CompTIA and Sophos skills certification, and development program and support to organize train-the-trainer activities, enabling Mapúa instructors to be certified before teaching the courses. Students will also be provided with an opportunity to be certified by Sophos by taking up a qualification exam after completing the specialization. Cutting-edge student learning tools and facilities will also be given to Mapúa by its partners.
"Our industry partners have developed cybersecurity tools that are considered global industry standards. Their incorporation into our curriculum lends great value to a Mapúa IT education. Learning these tools will make our graduates very globally competitive,” said Dr. Vea.
A 12-unit specialization track, Mapúa cybersecurity education consists of 4 professional elective courses where students will learn to: (1) apply security principles and practices to maintain operations in the presence of risks and threats; (2) apply concepts of confidentiality, integrity, availability, risk, adversarial thinking, and systems thinking; and (3) understand the fundamental and advanced topics of data security, software security, component security, connection security, system security, human security, organizational security, and societal security.
“With industry-aligned curriculum, we can maintain the currency of our teaching contents and assure industry that our graduates are equipped with the right knowledge and skills to become cybersecurity professionals,” said Dean Ariel Kelly Balan of Mapúa’s School of Information Technology (SOIT).
Mapúa is recognized as a Center of Excellence for IT education by the Philippines’ Commission on Higher Education (CHED). Three of its programs – BS Information Technology, BS Computer Science, and BS Information Systems – are accredited by US-based ABET’s Computing Accreditation Commission. The programs are also recognized by the Philippine Computer Society (PCS) Information and Computing Accreditation Board (PICAB), a provisional signatory member of the Seoul Accord, which grants accreditation to programs that meet the global standards of computing education.
