Mapúa honors outstanding student filmmakers in 17th CineMapúa

Mapúa University’s School of Media Studies (SMS), in cooperation with the Film, Arts, and Media Enthusiast (FAME) organization, has awarded student filmmaker exemplars in its 17th CineMapúa Awards Night held at the Mapúa Intramuros gymnasium last February 26, 2019.

Ten student films for each of the CineMapúa categories, namely, the Intercollegiate, All Mapúans, and High School, entered the finals out of the total 60 film entries.

Film screenings of the 30 short film finalists were conducted during the University’s 94th Founding Anniversary, which was celebrated last January 21 to 25. It is the first year that CineMapúa accepted entries from the high school level to showcase the crafts of today’s young aspiring filmmakers.

Students from the University of the Philippines Diliman receive their trophy and cash prize for winning best film in CineMapúa’s Intercollegiate Category for “Once Lang Magkafirst Love” from Dr. Reynaldo B. Vea (L), president of Mapúa University and Dennis N. Marasigan (R), a multi-awarded theater, film, and television director, and the chairman of the board of jurors of the 2019 CineMapúa

“Once Lang Magkafirst Love” of the University of the Philippines Diliman won best film and was awarded the Cardinal Gold Film Award in the Intercollegiate Category. “Tayo” of the College of Saint Benilde Manila won the Cardinal Silver Film Award as second best film, followed by “Sa Gabing Tanging Liwanag Ay Paniniwala” of the Far Eastern University Manila, winning the Cardinal Bronze Film Award.

Digital Media students of Mapúa’s School of Media Studies receive their trophy and cash prize for winning best film for “Gatilyo” in the All Mapúans Category

Film entries of Digital Cinema students from the University’s School of Media Studies won the three best film awards in the All Mapúans Category. “Gatilyo” won best film and was awarded the Cardinal Gold Film Award, followed by “Fleck”, winning the Cardinal Silver Film Award. “Linger” won the Cardinal Bronze Film Award.

Winners of both categories took home a CineMapúa trophy and a cash prize of P10,000, P7,000, and P5,000, respectively.

Students of iAcademy – Makati receive their trophy and cash prize for winning best film for “Press Conference” in the High School Category

The film “Press Conference” of iAcademy – Makati won the Cardinal Gold Film Award, besting all entries under the High School Category. Winner took home a CineMapúa trophy and a cash prize of P5,000. “Tulo” of the University of Santo Tomas Manila was awarded the Cardinal Silver Film Award, followed by “Bangungot” of Jesus Dela Peña National High School - Marikina City, receiving the Cardinal Bronze Film Award. Both schools took home a CineMapúa trophy and a cash prize of P3,000 and P2,000, respectively.

Special awards were also given in each category to recognize the talents and students behind the films’ production. Winners of the special awards took home a CineMapúa trophy.

CineMapúa started in 2002 as a culminating activity of a Social Science class under Prof. Benigno B. Agapito, Jr., who is now dean of the School of Media Studies. It was institutionalized in 2012. Three years later it opened its doors to entries from other universities and has become a platform for Mapúa to raise social awareness through films. CineMapúa is also known as the oldest running student film festival in the Philippines.

This year’s CineMapúa was also in partnership with Cardinal Eye, .MOVE, and Design Deconstruct student organizations. DZRH News Television and the Philippine Star were its media partners.
