“The Overcoming,” a short film by Mapúa student filmmaker Marc Kristian Palma, stood out as one of the top entries in the 2017 Cinema One Minute Student Film Competition.

The short film, chosen from over 400 submissions, was among the top 10 finalists that vied for the Perfect Sho[r]t Film Award and had the opportunity to be screened during the 13th Cinema One Originals Film Festival.

“I was thrilled when I got in. I already expected it but when the list of finalists came out, I was still surprised,” narrated Palma, a junior in the Multimedia Arts and Sciences program.

Living up to the festival’s theme “Walang Takot” (Fearless), the film tackled a prevalent matter in the Philippines, HIV.

“The Overcoming is not just about overcoming the fear of getting tested, it's also about overcoming the HIV stigma in the Philippines. I wanted everyone to know that ending the isolation and the stigma also means fighting HIV,” shared Palma.

Among those who helped Palma in creating the film are fellow Mapúans Beverly Ramos and Alicia Zamudio who served as assistant director and production designer, respectively.
