As surely as the physical world has rapidly shrunk so has the intangible world of knowledge dramatically expanded.

With today’s communications and transportation technologies, bits and atoms – ideas and objects – move at hitherto unimaginable speed across the vastness of planet earth. In a figurative sense, the globe has truly shrunk.

Knowledge of chemistry bloomed in the 19 th century; it was the turn of physics in the 20 th; and the 21 st belongs to biology. There is so much more that is unknown, but in the recent past the world’s fund of knowledge has grown by leaps and bounds. The multifarious application of this knowledge has led to technologies that have given rise to varied economic ventures and activities.

We believe that what we have upon us is a global and knowledge-based economy. On this premise, we at Mapua strive to prepare our students so that they can practice their profession or engage in business successfully within a global framework. This is the basic educational objective of our academic degree programs. As an educational outcome, we desire that they be globally competitive the very moment they pass through the portals of the school onto their professional lives.

This is not to say that we are exclusively preparing our students for jobs abroad, for even if they were to remain in the country they have to work in companies or start businesses that most probably will have global connections in any case. In our mind, there no longer should be any dichotomy in preparation for careers here or overseas.

The global nature of the market for professionals and for professional services makes it imperative that our academic programs be of international standards. Our students will have to be steeped in international standards of professional practice. Just as important, they have to have the skills to communicate effectively and to work in multidisciplinary teams. To increase the probability of correct career trajectories into the far future, our students must also possess the proper values and must be capable of critical and creative thought. The compass of their education must include the humanities and the cultures of other climes and times.
