The chairman emeritus of Mapúa Institute of Technology, Ambassador Alfonso T. Yuchengco, passed away on Saturday, 15 April 2017, at the age of 94.
The Yuchengco Group of Companies acquired ownership of the Institute in 1999 believing that in order to achieve the nation’s economic progress, educational institutions should help address the demands of the new millennium for quality professionals. Ambassador Yuchengco wanted to transform Mapúa into an international center of excellence in engineering, sciences, architecture, information technology, business, and the social sciences. During his time, Mapúa opened a campus in the Central Business District of Makati City, as an extension of the Intramuros campus. Today, it houses the School of Information Technology, and the E.T. Yuchengco School of Business and Management.
Also under his tutelage, Mapúa opened two subsidiary schools – Malayan Colleges Laguna and Malayan High School of Science in Pandacan, Manila.
In the following years, Mapúa obtained accreditation from the ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission and Computing Accreditation Commission for 13 of its programs. The Institute has also partnered with international research institutions and universities for student and faculty exchanges, and has since drummed up its engagement in viable research, development, and innovation efforts by opening a Research Center Building in Intramuros in 2015.
Mapúa Institute of Technology was globally recognized when Ambassador Yuchengco was at the helm.
His wake will be held Tuesday, 18 April 2017 at the Capilla de la Virgen of Santuario de San Antonio Parish in Forbes Park, Makati City. He will be interred at Manila Memorial Park in Sucat, Parañaque on 20 April, Thursday, after a funeral mass at 9:00am.
